These last few weeks I have been making an effort to watch the news, read articles on current events, and keep up with what is going on in the world. Over time I have noticed a pattern found in both politics and in just everyday opinions. In our world of extremes it is rare to find someone who is truly open minded. “It’s very difficult to give up our certainties our positions, our beliefs, our explanations.” This statement from “Willing to be Disturbed” stood out to me because it summed up basically what we as a people are afraid of. However the question remains, why? “Sometimes we hesitate to listen for differences because we don’t want to change.” At times it feels like the reason it takes so long to solve a problem is that people walk into a room saying that they have the intention of finding a solution. In reality however, they are actually desperately clinging onto a preexisting impression that they are unwilling to fluctuate, no matter what the circumstance. Their attitude being the old cliché, “it’s either my way, or the highway.”
Being open minded may mean going outside of your comfort zone, and so many are afraid that if things change from how they are their core morals will be lost and forgotten in the process. However I strongly feel that there is a fine line between giving up your beliefs and considering the other side of the issue. Yes, it’s true. This is a hard act to balance but if it is not done our country and our lives will end up at one extreme or the other. Compromise, hearing both sides, and being truly open to others opinions while still not sacrificing your own is the only way we can prosper.

Lovely...my favorite part is "Yes, it’s true. This is a hard act to balance but if it is not done our country and our lives will end up at one extreme or the other. Compromise, hearing both sides, and being truly open to others opinions while still not sacrificing your own is the only way we can prosper."
